River Basin Cases (WP1b)

Objectives
- Compilation and integration of current R&D approaches and results on the different river basins case studies that are part of projects of FP6 like AQUATERRA (Ebro, Elbe, Danube, Meuse), MODELKEY (Llobregat, Scheldt, Elbe) including also selected pilot river basins like Guadiana, Jucar and also projects that provide new monitoring tools to assess the quality and impact assessment of the river basin like SWIFT and NORMAN
- Exchange of experience and how to proceed to achieve monitoring programmes operational on soil-water-sediment system, as required by the WFD
- Supply a comprehensive integrated description of common issues in various river basins, with the objective to achieve a sustainable management options of the river basin involving key players: industry, administration of the departments of agriculture and environment, local authorities, scientists, unions and the public in general
Description of work
This WP will organise 4 workshops dedicated to specific European river-basin cases that are already also studied in other EC projects like AquaTerra and MODELKEY. The WP work (workshops) is aimed to achieve an overview of:
- Summary of the river basin characteristics.
- Main monitoring activities to comply with the WFD and related water directives
- Projects (national funding) and EU funding. What additional information bring EU funding projects to the river basin managers?
- Opinion of the different stakeholders of the river basin (river basin managers, administration coming form various departments, like agriculture, environment,..., unions, greens,.. and obviously scientists).
WP 1b will organise the following four events (note: the order in which the indicated basins will be addressed in workshops may change during the project):
- 1st workshop: Portuguese river basins
- 2nd workshop: Ebro basin
- 3rd workshop: Danube basin
- 4th workshop: Horizontal-integration issues between the various river basins studied in selected EU projects (MODELKEY, AQUATERRA, and National projects
- writing meeting: Overall WP 1b outcome synthesis in a meeting with selected WP core-team members aimed to produce the manuscript for chapter(s) in the scientific book
